Becoming a United States Citizen

Naturalization is the process by which U.S. citizenship is granted to a foreign citizen or national after he or she fulfills the requirements established by Congress in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). Becoming a citizen is one of the most important milestones in an immigrant's journey, granting the right to vote, travel with a U.S. passport, and petition for family members.

General Eligibility Requirements

While exceptions exist, general applicants for naturalization must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 18 years of age at the time of filing.
  • Have been a lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder) for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen).
  • Demonstrate continuous residence and physical presence in the United States.
  • Show an ability to read, write, and speak basic English.
  • Have a basic understanding of U.S. history and government (civics).
  • Demonstrate good moral character and an attachment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution.
